Bihar Police SI Salary 2026: In-Hand Pay, Pay Scale & Allowances

The Bihar Police SI salary starts at a basic pay of ₹35,400 per month in Pay Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission. After adding Dearness Allowance (DA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA) and cutting the NPS contribution, a new Sub-Inspector (Daroga) takes home roughly ₹51,000 to ₹58,000 per month, depending on the place of posting.

The Sub-Inspector is one of the most wanted graduate-level jobs in Bihar. It comes with officer rank, a uniform, real authority in a police station, and a clear path to Inspector and DSP. In this guide we cover the complete Bihar Police SI Salary 2026 — pay scale, salary slip, in-hand pay, allowances, deductions, salary during training, job profile and promotions.

Quick answer: ₹35,400 basic + ₹21,240 DA (60%) + HRA − ₹5,664 NPS = about ₹58,056 in Patna, ₹54,516 in other districts and ₹50,976 if you live in a government quarter, before small GIS and professional-tax deductions.

Bihar Police SI Pay Scale Explained

The Sub-Inspector post sits in Pay Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, which Bihar adopted for its state employees. Under the old system this was the ₹4,200 grade pay band. The starting basic pay is ₹35,400, and with yearly increments it can rise to a maximum of ₹1,12,400.

Basic pay is the most important number in the salary. DA, HRA and the NPS contribution are all calculated as a percentage of basic, so every increase in basic lifts the whole salary.

Bihar Police SI In-Hand Salary (Salary Slip)

Two SIs who join on the same day can take home different amounts. The only difference is HRA, which depends on where you are posted and whether you live in a government quarter. Here is a first-month salary slip at the current 60% DA:

ComponentPatnaOther districtGovt quarter
Basic pay₹35,400₹35,400₹35,400
Dearness Allowance (60%)₹21,240₹21,240₹21,240
House Rent Allowance₹7,080 (20%)₹3,540 (10%)₹0
Gross salary₹63,720₹60,180₹56,640
Less: NPS (10% of Basic + DA)− ₹5,664− ₹5,664− ₹5,664
Net in-hand (approx.)₹58,056₹54,516₹50,976

A Patna posting pays about ₹3,500 more each month than a district posting, purely because of HRA. If a government quarter is allotted, HRA is not paid and the in-hand figure drops to about ₹51,000.

HRA is shown at 20% for Patna and 10% for other towns, the same rates used in our Government Salary Calculator. Bihar’s Finance Department sets the state HRA rates, so check the exact rate for your posting on your pay slip.

Bihar Police SI Annual Salary Package

Many candidates search for the yearly figure rather than the monthly one. Here is the first-year package at the current 60% DA, multiplied over 12 months:

PostingGross per monthGross per yearIn-hand per monthIn-hand per year
Patna₹63,720₹7,64,640₹58,056₹6,96,672
Other district₹60,180₹7,22,160₹54,516₹6,54,192
Govt quarter₹56,640₹6,79,680₹50,976₹6,11,712

So the annual salary of a Bihar Police SI is about ₹6.8 lakh to ₹7.65 lakh gross, and about ₹6.1 lakh to ₹7 lakh in hand. If you add the government’s own NPS contribution (about ₹7,930 a month), the total cost to government (CTC) for a Patna-posted SI comes to roughly ₹8.6 lakh a year.

These figures do not include special duty pay, travel allowance or DA arrears, which push the real yearly earning a little higher.

Allowances for Bihar Police SI

On top of basic pay, a Bihar Police SI gets these allowances:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): 60% of basic pay now, revised about twice a year to match inflation. It is the biggest add-on in the salary.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): paid as a percentage of basic based on the posting city. Not paid if you live in a police quarter.
  • Uniform / kit allowance: for uniform upkeep, as per Bihar Police rules.
  • Ration / mess support: admissible to police personnel as per state orders.
  • Medical benefits: treatment for you and your dependants under state medical rules.
  • Special duty pay: extra during elections, festivals, VIP movement and law-and-order deployments.
  • Travel and daily allowance (TA/DA): for official tours, investigations and court work.

The smaller allowances vary by unit and posting, so they are not counted in the in-hand figures above.

Deductions From Bihar SI Salary

  • NPS (National Pension System): 10% of Basic + DA, about ₹5,664 a month at joining. The government adds its own contribution on top. This is your retirement saving, not a loss.
  • Group Insurance (GIS): a small fixed monthly premium.
  • Professional tax: a small state tax based on yearly income.
  • Income tax (TDS): only if your yearly taxable income crosses the limit under your chosen tax regime. Most new SIs pay little or no tax under the new regime.

How to Calculate Your Own In-Hand Salary

In-hand = (Basic + DA + HRA + other allowances) − (NPS + GIS + tax)

  1. Start with the basic pay of ₹35,400.
  2. Add DA at the current rate (60% = ₹21,240).
  3. Add HRA for your posting (Patna ₹7,080, other districts ₹3,540).
  4. Add any other allowances you receive.
  5. Subtract NPS (10% of Basic + DA = ₹5,664) and the smaller deductions.

Bihar Police SI Salary Growth: Level 6 Pay Matrix

Every year an SI gets an annual increment of about 3%, which moves the basic pay to the next cell of Level 6. The first ten steps look like this:

Year of serviceBasic pay
Year 1 (joining)₹35,400
Year 2₹36,500
Year 3₹37,600
Year 4₹38,700
Year 5₹39,900
Year 6₹41,100
Year 7₹42,300
Year 8₹43,600
Year 9₹44,900
Year 10₹46,200

Level 6 has 40 steps in total, ending at ₹1,12,400.

Bihar Daroga Salary After 5 and 10 Years

StageBasic payIn-hand (Patna)In-hand (district)
Joining₹35,400₹58,056₹54,516
Year 5₹39,900₹65,436₹61,446
Year 10₹46,200₹75,768₹71,148

This table keeps DA at 60% and counts no promotion. Real pay will be higher, because DA keeps rising and most SIs are promoted to Inspector within this period.

Will the DA Hike Increase Bihar SI Salary?

Yes. DA is a percentage of basic pay, so every DA hike raises take-home pay. The Centre’s DA from July 2026 works out to 63%, and Bihar usually follows the Centre’s rate. At 63% DA, a new SI’s gross pay rises by about ₹1,062 and in-hand pay by about ₹956 a month — taking Patna in-hand to around ₹59,012. We will update this page once Bihar notifies the new rate.

Will the 8th Pay Commission Change Bihar SI Salary?

Eventually, yes. The 8th Central Pay Commission was set up on 3 November 2025 and is still preparing its report, which is expected around 2027. It directly covers central government employees. A Bihar Police SI is a state government employee, so a new pay matrix will apply only after the Bihar government adopts it. Until then, the 7th Pay Commission Level 6 structure continues.

Pension and Retirement Benefits for Bihar SI

A newly recruited Bihar Police SI is covered under the National Pension System (NPS), which applies to Bihar state employees who joined service after the old pension scheme ended. It works like this:

  • Your share: 10% of Basic + DA is cut from your salary every month — about ₹5,664 at joining.
  • Government share: the government adds a further contribution (14% of Basic + DA under NPS rules), about ₹7,930 a month at joining. This is not deducted from you.
  • Your pension fund: together, roughly ₹13,600 a month goes into your NPS account in the first year, and this amount rises with every increment and DA hike.

At retirement, part of the NPS fund can be withdrawn as a lump sum and the rest buys a monthly pension. Along with NPS, SIs are also eligible for gratuity at retirement, leave encashment for unused earned leave, and group insurance cover during service. Together these make the SI post a secure long-term career, not just a good starting salary.

Bihar Police SI Training and Salary During Training

Newly selected SIs do a 12-month induction course at the Bihar Police Academy, Rajgir. Training covers law, investigation, forensics, cybercrime, drill, weapons, horse riding and swimming.

Trainee SIs are on probation and draw the pay of the post — basic pay plus DA — from joining. HRA is usually not paid while you stay in academy accommodation, so take-home during training is close to ₹51,000 a month. Full allowances start after regular posting.

Bihar Police SI Job Profile

The Sub-Inspector is the main investigating officer in a police station. Daily duties include:

  • Registering FIRs and investigating cases
  • Collecting evidence, making arrests and filing charge-sheets
  • Appearing in court and following up on cases
  • Handling law and order, patrols, elections and festival duty
  • Leading constables and head constables
  • Serving as officer-in-charge of a police outpost or station when posted

The work is demanding, with long hours and shift duty, but it carries real responsibility and public respect.

Bihar Police SI Promotion Path

The SI is the first officer rank a graduate can join directly, and promotions come through seniority and departmental fitness:

Sub-Inspector → Inspector of Police → Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) → higher ranks

  • Inspector of Police: promotion after the required years of service, at a higher pay level. Inspectors head police stations and circles.
  • DSP: senior Inspectors can be promoted into the Bihar Police Service as DSP, a gazetted officer post with much higher pay.
  • Higher ranks: further promotion (Additional SP and above) depends on vacancies, service record and state rules.

Bihar Police has given higher charge to large batches in recent rounds — over a thousand SIs were given Inspector charge in one round — so promotions do move.

Bihar Police SI Salary vs Other Bihar Government Jobs

How does a Daroga’s pay compare with other popular jobs in Bihar? Here are the starting in-hand figures from our salary guides:

JobPay levelApprox. in-hand per month
BPSC TeacherPrimary to senior secondary₹48,000 – ₹61,000
Bihar Police SILevel 6₹51,000 – ₹58,000
BSSC postsLevel 1 – Level 7₹23,000 – ₹73,000
Bihar Police ConstableLevel 3₹35,000 – ₹40,000

The SI pays more than most graduate-level jobs in Bihar and is close to a BPSC teacher. What sets it apart is the officer rank and authority that comes with the uniform, plus a promotion path that can lead to a gazetted DSP post.

Sergeant and Other Level 6 Posts in Bihar Police

The Sub-Inspector is not the only Level 6 post that BPSSC recruits. Police Sergeant posts have been recruited at the same Level 6 pay matrix (₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400), so a Sergeant’s basic pay and in-hand salary are the same as an SI’s. Other BPSSC posts such as Enforcement / Prohibition SI under the excise department also fall in Pay Level 6. The pay is the same; the duties, department and training length differ. Always check the pay level printed in each notification before you apply.

Bihar Police SI Salary for Female Candidates

The salary of a woman Sub-Inspector is exactly the same as a male SI — ₹35,400 basic pay, the same DA, HRA and allowances. Bihar gives 35% horizontal reservation to women in police recruitment; in Advt. No. 09/2026, 50 of the 150 SI posts were reserved for women. Women SIs also get maternity leave and the other leave benefits available to Bihar state employees.

How to Become a Bihar Police SI

BPSSC recruits Sub-Inspectors through Prelims → Mains → Physical Test (PST/PET) → Document Verification and Medical. You need a graduation degree from a recognised university, a minimum age of 20 years, and you must meet the height and running standards.

The latest notification, Advt. No. 09/2026, was for 150 Sub-Inspector posts in the Special Branch, with applications closed on 9 August 2026. Keep checking the official BPSSC website for the exam date and the next SI recruitment: bpssc.bihar.gov.in.
